Waxed Cotton And The Fabrics That Predate Membranes

Before laminated membranes existed, outdoor clothing kept rain out using tightly woven natural fibre and oil, and those materials still suit some conditions better.

Waxed cotton and closely woven natural fabrics were the standard outdoor wear for a long period. They remain in use, and not only for reasons of nostalgia.

Two different waterproofing strategies

A membrane blocks liquid water with a film of pores too small for droplets and large enough for vapour molecules. The fabric is a barrier and the barrier is the whole mechanism.

Waxed cotton works differently. Wax fills the spaces in the weave and makes the fibres water-repellent, so water beads and runs rather than being stopped by an impermeable layer.

Tightly woven untreated cotton uses a third mechanism again. The fibres swell when wet, closing the weave and sealing the fabric with the water that lands on it.

Air movement is the practical difference

A membrane stops air entirely. Vapour crosses only by diffusion, and in still humid conditions that transfer is slow, which is the origin of the familiar clammy feeling in a hard shell.

Waxed and woven fabrics pass some air. That means they are less waterproof in sustained heavy rain and considerably more comfortable in prolonged effort at moderate temperature.

Which is preferable depends on whether the day's problem is rain arriving or sweat leaving, and those are genuinely different days.

Wear behaviour is nearly opposite

A membrane garment fails abruptly. The laminate delaminates or the treatment on the face fabric stops working, and the point of failure cannot be repaired in any meaningful sense.

Waxed cotton degrades gradually and is renewed by reapplying wax, an operation done at home with heat and a tin. The garment's performance is maintained rather than lost.

Tears are patchable, seams are restitchable, and the fabric is heavy enough to take both, which is why these garments are frequently older than the people wearing them.

Weight is the reason they left the hills

Waxed cotton is heavy, and it gets heavier when wet as the outer face saturates. Over a long day carrying a pack that difference is substantial and it does not diminish.

It also dries slowly and stiffens in cold. For multi-day mountain use these are decisive disadvantages, and the shift to synthetics in that context was not a matter of fashion.

Where weight does not matter, on a farm, a riverbank or a short winter walk, the same properties are irrelevant and the durability dominates.

Abrasion is where they still win

Thorns, bark and stone destroy lightweight synthetic shells quickly, because the fabrics are thin by design and a laminate cannot survive being holed.

Heavy cotton takes that treatment for years. This is why the material persists among people working outdoors in scrub and woodland, whose day involves more contact with vegetation than with weather.

Questions readers ask

Why did my torch come back to life in my pocket?

Cold raised the cell's internal resistance and its voltage sagged under load. Warming it restored the reaction rate, and the charge that appeared to be gone became usable again.

Which batteries are best for winter?

Lithium primary cells generally outperform alkaline in cold. Rechargeable lithium-ion works but loses runtime and should not be charged below freezing.

How should I store batteries between trips?

Cool, dry and out of the device. Lithium-ion keeps better at partial charge than full, and alkaline cells left in equipment can leak and destroy it.
